Course Overview

Good marketing is pivotal for business success. From a cohesive brand identity to coherent communications, marketing is a key area which requires significant investment of business resource.The Brunel Marketing MSc provides graduates, professionals or consultants with critical insights into how to successfully manage this by following the marketing best practice of national and international organisations.

This is an opportunity to study traditional and contemporary marketing philosophies and theories which are based upon academic research as well as real world practices. It’s also possible to gain sought after qualifications in Professional Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and become a member while you study your master’s in Marketing. You will develop critical and creative skills, procedural thinking, and expertise that enable you to generate, implement and evaluate organisational activities that satisfy the requirements of both your employer and their customer base. Practical experience can be gained in the Business Planning module by creating a business plan with a route to market for a real entrepreneurial venture.

If you start your course in September you can study one year full-time,16 months full-time (with a 6-12 weeks placement), or two years full-time (with one year's placement). If you start your course in January, you can study 15 months full-time, 19 months full-time (with 6-12 weeks placement), or 27 months (with one year's placement).

Brunel’s Marketing MSc is designed for anyone wishing to become a marketing professional or planning to undertake marketing research in an academic or commercial setting. Those with little or no marketing experience will appreciate the breadth of management subjects covered in the degree, specifically how marketing fits within the overall organisation practice.

Course content

The Marketing MSc consists of compulsory modules that give you a broad understanding of marketing in organisations of all sizes. Optional modules allow you to take a closer look at related areas of interest like CSR, social media, diversity in the workplace and branding.

Optional modules are indicative and available subject to numbers.
This course can be studied 1 year full-time, 16 months full-time with placement or 2 years full-time with placement, starting in September. Or this course can be studied 15 months full-time, 19 months full-time with placement or 27 months full-time with placement, starting in January.

Understanding process, theory, social impact and ethics of marketing communications.

MG5561 International Marketing

Developing insight and investigative ability to conduct research in developing and implementing market strategies across international sectors.

MG5608 Marketing Principles

Taking the basic marketing concepts and contrasting them with newer relational and service-based perspectives in a module that is designed to be motivational, creative, applied and relevant to today’s marketing practice.

MG5609 Strategic Marketing Management

Exploration of the planning cycle and strategising.

MG5615 Understanding Business and Management Research

Quantitative and qualitative methods in management research. Understanding research reports and utilising this information to improve quality of work and decision-making in complex management problems.

MG5620 Contemporary Brand Management

MG5510 - Dissertation

Researching and writing a 12,000 word dissertation is an integral part of the course. Your dissertation should focus upon empirical research into a management problem or issue of your choice to be agreed with your tutor, who will support you in your research. The dissertation must be submitted by the end of the academic year.MG5625 Strategic Digital Marketing

MG2096 - Consumer Behaviour

This module aims to provide students with a critical understanding of ‘consumer behaviour’ as investigative discipline informing individual and marketing decisions. Attention will be paid to the external, situational and internal factors which include psychological, social, cultural and economic factors that influence consumer behaviour in personal buying situations and the complexity of the Decision-Making Unit and process.

Studying the development of the business plan. Examines different business models, their underlying strategies, and the decision-making process through a variety of case studies.

MG5601 Business Intelligence

Exploring the most significant technologies associated with business intelligence, big data and data analytics, with a particular emphasis on applications in the corporate sector. Developing knowledge and professional competency in the analysis, interpretation and management of corporate knowledge resources, and gaining proficiency in relevant tools.

MG5577 International and Comparative Human Resource Management

Examining human resources strategy and practice for organisations operating across national boundaries, including the EU and its member states, the USA, Japan and South East Asia.

MG5621 Creativity, Entrepreneurship and Innovation

This module aims to define creativity within the context of innovative and entrepreneurial firms. It seeks to analyse creativity at individual, group, organisational, urban and national levels, delineating its vital role in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

UK entry requirements
 
• A 2:2 (or above) UK Honours degree, or an equivalent internationally recognised qualification, in a related or non-related subject. Work experience is not required.

EU and International entry requirements

If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must prove knowledge of the English language so that we can issue you a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS). To do this, you will need an IELTS for UKVI or Trinity SELT test pass gained from a test centre approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and on the Secure English Language Testing (SELT) list. This must have been taken and passed within two years from the date the CAS is made.

English language requirements

• IELTS: 6.5 (min 6 in all areas)
• Pearson: 58 (51 in all subscores)
• BrunELT: 65% (min 60% in all areas)
• TOEFL: 92 (min 20 in all)

Should you wish to take a pre-sessional English course to improve your English prior to starting your degree course, you must sit the test at an approved SELT provider for the same reason. We offer our own BrunELT English test and have pre-sessional English language courses for students who do not meet requirements or who wish to improve their English. Teaching and Learning
 
Teaching includes lectures, informal small study groups, and individual or group presentations using a laptop and digital projector.

As a research active university, international level research findings by Brunel Business School tutors are regularly used in lectures.

Tutors on this programme are leaders in the field of management and active researchers within one of the six centres of research within the School - the Marketing and Corporate Brand Management Research Group (MCBM).

Assessment and feedback
 
Modules are usually assessed by individual assessment or by examination in May.

Coursework and examinations give you a chance to demonstrate critical and constructive thinking and reasoning. Your dissertation is a 12,000 word document that will show your ability to conceive, design and execute a major project, which confidently substantiates your chosen line of enquiry.
