Previous Knowledge

No previous skills or knowledge are required to study this course, however we do require that your written English skills are of a good standard.

Explain what style is and why you need a style guide.

Module 04: Spelling, punctuation and grammar

Maintain accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
List techniques and resources that will assist with accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Apply the rules of spelling, punctuation and grammar to a range of exercises.

Module 05: Avoiding jargon

Define and identify appropriate and inappropriate jargon.
Edit words, phrases and sentences to eliminate jargon.

Module 06: Editing with clarity

Explain and apply editing techniques that make copy fluent, plain and simple to read.

Module 07: Common pitfalls

Edit copy so that cliches are identified and replaced.
Identify and replace cliches and offensive or inappropriate material.
Write to suit multicultural audiences.

Module 08: Accuracy

Explain how web copy can fail to convey information accurately.
Analyse words and phrases to make sure they convey the correct meaning.

Module 09: Checking facts

Explain the types of factual errors that frequently occur in copy.
List techniques and processes for identifying and correcting them.

Module 10: Essential laws A

Explain how the laws of copyright, trademark and libel effect the copy editor.
Apply them to a range of situations.

Module 11: Essential laws B

Explain how the laws of contempt of court, data protection and restricted identity affect the web editor.
Apply them to a range of situations.

Module 12: Effective presentation

Explain the difference between editing text and editing the design of a webpage.
List the design aspects that an editor must check.

Module 13: Webpage essentials

Explain the factors determining the content of a webpage.
Apply these factors to building a webpage.
Define the website tools and applications available to a web editor.

Module 14: Building page content

Use links, downloads, contact details and other building blocks to help visitors use a web page.

Module 15: Accessibility

Explain what the Equality Act (EA) says about website access.
Define disabled user groups and the equipment that is available to them.
List the tools and techniques a web editor can use to make a site EA compliant.
Explain what alt text is and how to write it.
List checks that can be made on a website to make is EA compliant.

Module 16: Basic SEO

Define the term SEO.
Explain the importance of working ethically.
List strategies a web editor can use to achieve effective search engine results pages.
Use SEO terminology.
Explain how web surfers can use search results.

Module 17: Achieving interaction and engagement

Explain the two main types of visitors to a website, and how to meet their needs.
Explain the benefits of an interactive website.
Select and use interactive tools.

Module 18: Web Editing software

Learn the basics of Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, Photoshop, JavaScript, video editing, PHP and MySQL, and a Content Management System (CMS).

Assessment

The Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and Certa Awards is gained by successfully completing a series of assignments. Your personal tutor will review, mark and provide you with feedback on your work.

AWARDING BODY

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and Certa Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards and Certa Awards Quality Licence Scheme. This means that NCC Home Learning has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet defined quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to a regulated qualification* but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills gained. The Learner Unit Summary may be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this subject.
